Wanning City is located on the southeast coast of Hainan Island, with 110.39° east longitude and 18.8° north latitude. It borders the South China Sea to the east, Qiongzhong to the west, Lingshui to the south and Qionghai to the north. It is 112 kilometers away from Sanya City to the south and 139 kilometers away from Haikou City to the north. It is located in the middle of the eastern highway.

The total urban area of Wanning City is 4443.6 square kilometers, of which the land area is 1883.5 square kilometers and the sea area is 2,550 square kilometers. In the land area, mountains account for about half, hills and plains each account for a quarter. The total population of the city is 554,500, including 476,100 Han people and 78,400 people from 18 ethnic minorities including Li and Miao. The administrative area has 12 towns, 6 townships, and 201 administrative districts. There are 1,635 natural villages, 7 state-owned agricultural and forestry farms, 1 overseas Chinese farm, and 1 state-owned forestry farm. The resident of Wanning Municipal People's Government is Wancheng Town.
